Devoting to Water Resources & Striving for Self-improvement
Water is the source of life, the key to production, and the foundation of ecology. Promoting water conservancy and eliminating water disasters, which are related to human survival, economic development and social progress, have always been an important part in the administration of the the country and the prosperity of the people. North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) was born and developed along with the pace of the construction of new China, especially with the need of water conservancy and hydropower construction in China.
Long History of NCWU Nourishes the Development of China
Shortly new China was founding, there was a shortage of water conservancy talents. In 1951, the Ministry of Water Resources decided to set up Beijing Water Resources College. With intense preparations, the opening ceremony was held on September 15th. Minister of Water Resources Fu Zuoyi attended the meeting and made an important speech.
A trickle makes a river. In 1958, Beijing College of Water Resources and Electric Power Correspondence and Beijing Hydroelectric Power School were merged into Beijing Water Resources and Electric Power College, with Zhang Zilin, the pioneer of water conservancy in New China, was the first president. In 1969, the college moved to Hebei Province, and successively operated in Yuecheng Reservoir and Handan City. In 1978, it was renamed as North China College of Water Resources and Electric Power, and a postgraduate department was established at the former Beijing campus. In early of 1990, the complete system of the college was moved to Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, and in 2013, it was renamed as North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power.
In the course of the construction and development of the university, we will always keep in mind the cordial care of Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai and other party and state leaders. We will never forget the strong support and love from the leaders of the Ministry of Water Resources, Beijing city, Hebei province and Henan province.
At present, NCWU consists of Huayuan Campus and Longzihu Campus, covering an area of more than 2300mu. The university is an institution characterized by water conservancy and electric power. Engineering oriented, it is coordinated with science, engineering, management, agriculture, economics, arts, law and art. The university has an enrollment of more than 28,000 full-time students, and has the award doctoral degrees in 3 primary disciplines, 19 secondary disciplines, and also has the authority to award master’s degrees in 13 primary disciplines, 58 secondary disciplines. NCWU has 64 full-time undergraduate programs, one featured discipline of Henan Province, 13 provincial-level primary key disciplines, 11 provincial-level key laboratories, engineering laboratories and experimental centers. Water conservancy and hydropower engineering, geological engineering and agricultural water conservancy engineering are national characteristic major construction points. Seven teaching teams, such as geological engineering, hydropower power engineering, civil engineering, machinery, and engineering mathematics analysis are chosen as provincial level teaching teams in Henan Province.
NCWU was established and sponsored by Henan government and the Ministry of Water Resources. It is one of the first batch of universities in the “National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China”, the founding member of “the BRICS Universities League” and “BRICS Network University”, the first batch of “national hydrologic information education base”, and one of the “ 50 top universities in China for graduates employment”.
Today’s NCWU has entered a new stage of connotation promotion, coordinated brilliance and prosperity.
Deep-rooted and Flourishing
A great university relies on its brilliant masters
At every development stage of the university, groups of loyal teachers devote themselves to learning and teaching. Since 1960, Mr. Wang Huzhen, a famous expert on water conservancy and member of the first academic department of the State Council, has been the president of the university for 19 years with outstanding achievements. Yao Hanyuan, Nan Xinxu, Tianyuan, Chen Yuhe, Cheng Xuewen, Wang Zhenghong, Duan Changguo and many other well-known experts and academicians have taught and educated students here.
NCWU implements on the strategy of “strengthening university with talent”, adheres to the combination of talent training and introduction, and gathers academic leaders and outstanding experts from all over the world.
